A few extra strands in the shower are easy to ignore. Then suddenly, there seems to be hair everywhere—on your sweater, around your brush, in the drain, between your fingers when you wash it.
The instinct is often to investigate what changed this week. A new shampoo. A styling product. Something you ate.
But hair operates on a surprisingly different timeline.
One of the most common causes of diffuse shedding, telogen effluvium, often becomes noticeable months after the event that triggered it. By the time your hair begins falling, the illness, physiological stress, nutritional change, or hormonal shift associated with it may already be over.
That delay changes the question.
Instead of only asking, What am I doing to my hair right now?
It may be more useful to ask:
What was happening to my body several months ago?
01. Hair doesn't grow continuously.
Every hair follicle moves through a biological cycle.
The long active growth phase is called anagen. It is followed by a brief transitional phase called catagen, then a resting phase known as telogen. Eventually, the old hair is released during shedding—often described as the exogen phase—as the follicle moves toward another cycle.
This means losing hair is not inherently abnormal. Hair is supposed to shed.
What changes in telogen effluvium is the proportion of follicles moving through that cycle. Following certain triggers, more hairs than usual can transition from active growth toward the resting phase. Those hairs don't necessarily fall immediately.
They wait.
And that is why the shedding you see today can reflect something that happened much earlier.
02. The hair falling today may reflect what happened months ago.
This is one of the most useful—and least intuitive—things to understand about sudden hair shedding.
A significant illness, high fever, surgery, childbirth or another physiological stressor can occur while your hair continues looking completely normal.
Then, weeks or months later, shedding begins.
Telogen effluvium classically appears roughly two to three months after a triggering event, although the timing can vary.
The delay exists because the affected follicles have shifted into another part of their growth cycle. The visible shedding is therefore not necessarily happening at the same time as the biological event associated with it.
So when hair loss seems to have appeared “out of nowhere,” looking only at the previous few days may miss the relevant window entirely.
Your hair doesn't literally remember.
But its growth cycle creates a biological record of what happened earlier.
03. “Stress” is more complicated than it sounds.
Hair shedding is frequently blamed on stress.
There is truth behind that association, but the word stress can become so broad that it stops being particularly useful.
Telogen effluvium has been associated with substantial physiological stresses including illness, surgery, childbirth and rapid weight loss. Psychological stress is also discussed as a potential contributor, although the relationship between stress biology and human hair cycling is complex.
That distinction matters.
A difficult Tuesday is not the same physiological event as major surgery, a high fever or childbirth.
And when significant shedding persists, automatically deciding that “it's probably stress” can prevent someone from considering other explanations.

What changed in the body—and when?
Stress may be part of that history. It shouldn't automatically become the entire diagnosis.
04. Rapid weight loss can show up somewhere you weren't expecting.
Hair follicles are metabolically active structures.
That makes nutrition relevant to hair biology—but not in the simplistic sense that one smoothie, vitamin or so-called hair superfood will suddenly produce thicker hair.
Rapid weight loss and significant dietary restriction have been associated with telogen effluvium.
This is particularly relevant in a wellness culture where eating dramatically less can sometimes be presented as discipline, cleansing or “getting healthy.”
A diet can contain nutritious foods and still provide insufficient total energy or inadequate amounts of particular nutrients.
And when food intake changes substantially, hair may not be the first place the consequences become visible.
There is another important distinction here: hair shedding cannot tell you exactly which nutrient you are missing.
It is a clue, not a laboratory test.
Persistent shedding after significant weight or dietary changes deserves investigation rather than an automatic trip to the supplement aisle.
05. Iron matters—but ferritin isn't a magic hair-growth number.
Iron is one of the first nutrients discussed when women experience diffuse hair loss.
There is legitimate scientific interest here. Studies have examined the relationship between iron status, ferritin and different forms of hair loss, and iron deficiency is something clinicians may consider when evaluating unexplained diffuse shedding.
But social media has turned a nuanced clinical question into something much more absolute.
Low iron status can matter. That does not mean every woman experiencing hair loss should start taking iron.
Ferritin is commonly used as a marker related to the body's iron stores, but its interpretation belongs within a broader clinical picture. Different studies have also used different thresholds when investigating the relationship between ferritin and hair loss.
More importantly, supplements aren't automatically harmless simply because a nutrient is essential.
If iron deficiency is suspected, the sophisticated approach is not guessing.
It is testing, interpreting the results appropriately and addressing an actual deficiency if one exists.
06. Your thyroid can show up in your hair.
Hair follicles respond to an enormous amount of internal biology, including endocrine signals.
Thyroid dysfunction is therefore among the medical conditions clinicians may consider when investigating otherwise unexplained diffuse hair loss.
That does not mean hair shedding equals a thyroid disorder.
It means something more important:
Hair loss is a symptom. It isn't a diagnosis.
A clinician evaluating persistent shedding may look beyond the scalp and ask about other symptoms, medical history, medications, nutritional changes and menstrual or hormonal history before deciding whether laboratory testing is appropriate.
This is why treating every case of hair loss with the same gummy, serum or shampoo misses the biology entirely.
Two women can appear to have the same complaint—“my hair is falling out”—for very different reasons.
07. Postpartum shedding is a remarkable example of the hair cycle at work.
Pregnancy and the postpartum period provide one of the clearest examples of how hormonal changes can alter what we eventually see in our hair.
After childbirth, the abrupt change in the hormonal environment can be followed by pronounced diffuse shedding several months later.
To someone experiencing it, the amount of hair being lost can feel alarming.
But once again, the timing teaches us something.
The biological event and the visible hair loss don't necessarily happen together.
Postpartum shedding can also occasionally make another underlying pattern of hair loss easier to notice. That is one reason a seemingly obvious explanation shouldn't necessarily be assumed indefinitely if the pattern, severity or recovery seems unusual.
The timeline matters.
So does what happens next.
08. Biotin may be one of hair wellness's biggest marketing-science gaps.
Few nutrients have been marketed as aggressively for hair as biotin.
It appears in gummies, powders, capsules, shampoos and entire supplement systems promising stronger, healthier or faster-growing hair.
The evidence for routinely giving additional biotin to otherwise healthy people for hair growth is far less impressive than the marketing suggests.
True biotin deficiency can affect hair, but deficiency is considered uncommon. Reviews of the available evidence have found limited support for routine biotin supplementation for hair growth in people without an underlying deficiency or condition associated with poor hair or nail growth.
And there is another issue many supplement labels don't emphasize:
High-dose biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests.
It can distort some test results, including assays used in thyroid testing and other clinically important laboratory measurements.
That creates an unusual irony.
Someone might begin taking high-dose biotin because she is worried about her hair, then undergo blood testing to investigate why her hair is changing—and the supplement itself may interfere with certain laboratory results.
This is exactly why OŪI believes “it's just a vitamin” is not a sufficient reason to take something.
Popular does not mean proven. And more does not automatically mean better.
09. Shedding and female-pattern hair loss are not the same thing.
The phrase hair loss makes several different biological processes sound like one condition.
They aren't.
Telogen effluvium generally presents as relatively sudden, diffuse shedding across the scalp.
Female-pattern hair loss tends to develop more gradually and may appear as progressive reduction in density, often with a widening part or more visible scalp through the central area.
And importantly, the two patterns can sometimes coexist.
An episode of unusually heavy shedding can make previously subtle patterned thinning much easier to notice.
This is one reason simply counting the hairs in your shower doesn't tell the entire story.
A dermatologist looks at more than quantity.
Pattern matters. Timing matters. The scalp matters. Your history matters.
10. The hair-growth industry loves urgency. Hair biology requires patience.
When shedding begins, it is understandable to want something that stops it immediately.
A serum. A supplement. A shampoo. A treatment.
But the biology that created the shedding didn't happen overnight, and hair growth itself is slow.
In temporary telogen effluvium, shedding may improve after the triggering factor has resolved, but visible recovery takes time because follicles have to progress through their normal cycle and newly growing hairs need time to become noticeable.
This makes hair particularly vulnerable to misleading before-and-after marketing.
If someone begins three supplements, changes shampoo, starts a scalp serum and improves her diet at the exact moment a temporary episode of telogen effluvium was naturally beginning to resolve, it can be almost impossible to know which intervention—if any—caused the improvement.
Sometimes time itself is part of the treatment story.
That doesn't mean doing nothing is always appropriate.
It means understanding the expected biology before attributing recovery to the newest product on your bathroom shelf.
11. When should shedding become a medical conversation?
Temporary shedding can resolve, particularly when the underlying trigger has passed.
But unexplained, substantial or persistent hair loss deserves more than supplement experimentation.
A clinician or dermatologist can examine the pattern of loss and consider recent illness, fever, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight change, restrictive eating, medications, hormonal changes, family history, scalp symptoms and other changes in your health.
Medical evaluation becomes particularly important when hair loss is patchy, rapidly progressive, associated with scalp pain, inflammation or scarring, accompanied by other unexplained symptoms, or simply not behaving like a temporary episode of shedding.
The goal isn't to become frightened by every strand in the shower.
It is to know when:
“It's probably stress” is no longer a sufficient explanation.

Hair is unusual because what you see today may be the final visible chapter of a biological event that began months earlier.
That makes sudden shedding frustrating—but it can also make the timeline surprisingly informative.
Instead of immediately asking which shampoo, gummy, serum or supplement might stop it, look backward.
Were you significantly ill a few months ago? Did you have surgery? Give birth? Lose weight rapidly? Restrict your diet? Start or stop a medication? Was there another major change in your health?
Then look at the pattern.
Is this sudden shedding from across the scalp? Or has your part gradually become wider? Has the shedding continued? Has your scalp changed? Are there other symptoms?
Sometimes the most useful thing hair can teach us is that beauty and biology were never separate subjects.
And sometimes the answer isn't another product.
It's understanding what your body was doing before your hair began telling you about it.
